With the core groups establishing themselves, the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on Active and Healthy Ageing is entering a new phase. The action plans for the numerous EIP actions are due in October. The ultimate goal is to accelerate on the path towards large-scale deployment.
In times of fiscal austerity, healthcare IT can help to keep costs in check while at the same time maintain or indeed increase quality of care. But this will only come true if eHealth projects are closely aligned to strategic health-policy goals.
With the epSOS project, the European Commission has initiated a successful first step towards cross-border interoperability of electronic medical data in Europe. Five European Member States have gone live already, but problems remain that need to be addressed politically rather than technically.

Upcoming Events

13th May - 18th May 2012: HL7 Working Group meeting

HL7 working group meetings (WGM) are held three times per year at varying locations. These working group meetings serve two important purposes: 1) They give the HL7 work groups a chance to meet face-to-face to work on the standards; 2) They provide an educational resource for the healthcare IT community. The next WGM will take place from 13th until 18th of May, 2012 in Vancouver (Canada).

Head of the Semantic Experts Group, Giorgio Cangioli, will hold a presentation about epSOS and its experience as Cross SDO project in the meeting on "HL7 Activities with Other SDOs" that takes place during the event.

29th May - 30th May 2012: PEPPOL conference

The 7th PEPPOL conference will take place in Rome (Roma Eventi Conference Centre 'Fontana di Trevi') from the 29th to 30th May, 2012. The event will provide insight into the results and the future follow-up of the LSP project. Interested parties will be provided with examples of pilot achievements and other first-hand information about PEPPOL. The aim is to show decision makers of the European Commission, Member States, public sector entities, suppliers and service providers the long term sustainability of PEPPOL through specific initiatives. 4th May 2012

On the 4th of May 2012 the second Technical Validation Meeting of the LSPs took place in Brussels. epSOS was discussed among the other LSPs under the topic of 'Medical Files'.

13th April 2012

On the 13th of April 2012, the epSOS piloting phase has started, testing the technical, semantic and legal solutions that have been developed in the epSOS project in a real-life environment over a one-year period. Over more than three years, the members of the epSOS project, cofunded by the European Commission, have invested hours of hard work as well as enthusiasm into the development of feasible cross-border eHealth services, addressing technical, semantic and legal interoperability challenges. These tremendous efforts have now finally culminated in the large scale pilot entering into operational mode.

5th March - 10th March 2012

On the 7th of March, during Opens internal link in current windowCeBIT 2012, the first Technical Validation Meeting took place. The meeting was attended by representatives of Large Scale Pilots (LSPs), and by representatives from Industry who identify relevant interests in supporting the evolution of LSP results (building blocks) towards pan-European interoperability of services, and who identify the potential benefits from the existence of an assured mechanism for Europe-wide interoperability of eGovernment services for business. Follow the webzine in order to stay up-to-date about the progress of the LSPs.

13th February 2012

On the 25th of January the follow-up of the meeting "Future planning for the LSP Building Blocks - Medium and long term" took place. In this context the preparation of the new Pilot A on the objective of "Basic Cross Sector Services" in the 6th Call for Proposals of the CIP ICT PSP Programme was discussed. epSOS Project Coordinator Fredrik Linden participated in the meeting and presented his ideas on the new pilot. Furthermore, the new eHealth network - which will meet in this new constellation for the very first time during the eHealth week in Copenhagen - was presented by the EC. 

24th November 2011

Results from the eHGI & epSOS event in 2011

In the beginning of November the 2011 epSOS and eHealth Governance Initaive joint event took place. From 9th until 11th of November a number of events and workshops where held as satellites to the central "epSOS pilots setting sail" event that took place on the 10th of November, 2011 in Athens.  

The objectives of the event(s) were:

  • to show conditions of legal, organizational, semantic and technical interoperability of cross border eHealth based services: PS / eP 
  • to offer to a wide audience of delegates from governments, industries, healthcare and research organisations the results achieved so far and demonstrate how epSOS got to setting sail of its pilots
  • to reflect on the importance and role of epSOS within the EU policy and strategy domain as well as the way epSOS is influencing national implementations
  • to demonstrate epSOS in action
