03-04 December 2012: WHO Forum on Health Data Standardization and Interoperability

The eHealth unit at the World Health Organization (WHO) is leading work in collaboration with technical programmes and member states to advance the appropriate use of ICTs to deliver quality of health services, reduce cost and achieve universal health coverage. The "WHO Forum on Health Data Standardization and Interoperability" included - among others - representatives from health data Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), Member States, academic and research institutions and implementers.

Stéphane Spahni, epSOS project member from the University Hospitals of Geneva, participated in this event.

03-04 December 2012: Europeone e-Government Conference

The "Europeone" e-Government Conference took place from 3rd to 4th of December 2012 in Nicosia (Cyprus) and brought together experts from the Commission, the Member States, the Candidate Countries and the Private Sector. The conference focused on issues related to interoperability, key enablers, cross border services, trust and privacy, new technologies tendencies, and e-procurement. The event was organized within the context of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of EU.

epSOS Project Coordinator, Fredrik Lindén, attended the event as speaker about the epSOS project, its achievements and the future plans of the project.

14-15 November 2012: HISI Conference

The 17th Annual HISI Conference, Scientific Symposium and Exhibition (2012) took place on 14th/15th November 2012 in the Stillorgan Park Hotel, Dublin (Ireland). This year's theme was about: "Impact and potential of eHealth in the delivery and management of Healthcare".

Jeremy Thorp, Quality Manager and responsible person for the planning and implementation of activities aiming at serving the Openness and Transparency policies in epSOS, held an epSOS presentation at this event.

25-26 October 2012: IHTSDO Showcase 2012

The International Health Terminologies Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) held its second international Implementation Showcase in Stockholm, Sweden on 25-26 October 2012. This followed on from the success of the first Showcase held in Sydney in 2011.

The Showcase allowed attendees to interact with SNOMED CT implementers from around the world who shared their first-hand knowledge about the benefits, challenges and lessons learned from a variety of implementations.

epSOS Project Coordinator Fredrik Lindén attended the event with a presentation on "epSOS make sense of cross-border healthcare".

08-10 October 2012: LSP roadshow stops at European Parliament

At the "Made in Europe" exhibition from 8th to 10th of October, 2012 the LSP projects received the unique opportunity to show high level politicians in the European Parliament the results and achievements in the projects made so far. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) were offered guided tours in 8 different languages. Many MEPs, their staff and other pass-by visitors (invitees of the MEPs) took the chance to see the exhibition.

epSOS was among the LSP projects demonstrating how to retrieve a Patient Summary from a citizen coming from another European country than the health professional.

The event started with an opening event on the 8th where the Vice President of the European Commission, Neelie Kroes, and the hosting MEP Maria Da Graça Carvalho once more pointed out how important EU research and innovations are for our society (read Opens external link in new windowhere the full speech of the VP). Afterwards the event was officially declared open with the ribbon cut and the help of Kompaï.

03-06 October 2012: epSOS at European Health Forum in Gastein

The European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) is a health policy event that takes place annually. In 2012 the event took place from 3rd to 6th of October under the theme of "Crisis and opportunity - Health in the age of Austerity". It provided a platform for decision-makers in various fields of public health & healthcare. With its four-day programme, the EHFG offered an opportunity to exchange information about a broad spectrum of contemporary health issues.

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Health as the National Authority for Austria in epSOS operated a booth dedicated to the project showing a live demonstration and distributing information materials +  gadgets!

24-25 September 2012: epSOS at LSP Roadshow event in Cologne

The 5th stop of the LSP Roadshow took place during the IT Forum "Europe goes online" in Cologne, Germany. It was held September 24 - 25, 2012. epSOS, as one of the 5 Large-Scale-Pilot projects, shared information on the latest project's progress and achievements by operating a booth. For more details on the event click Opens external link in new windowhere, for information on the LSPs visit

24-25 September 2012: Joint epSOS presentation at DeRC2012

The Slovenia’s Inter-Municipality Initiative: Cross-border eCollaboration in the Danube eRegion was the organizer of the 2nd Danube eRegion Conference – DeRC: Cross-border eSolutions & eServices Prototypes Development.  This second conference took place in Ljubljana on September 24th & 25th, 2012. epSOS participated with a joint Austrian and Slovenian presentation by Smiljana Vončina Slavec (SL) and Kathrin Morawetz (AT) in the session "Creating National & Local Government Platforms for Cross-border eSolutions & eServices in the Danube Region". 20 September 2012: World e-ID Congress 2012

Marcello Melgara, Leader of  WP3.B Implementation, held a presentation about "What's next after epSOS has entered into operational mode? From record to endurance" on September 20th in Nice, France. 

26-29 August 2012: MIE 2012

On behalf of the Italian Medical Informatics Association (AIIM), the eHealth Italian Community and the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI), invited to the 24th European Medical Informatics Conference - MIE2012 - in Pisa, August 26th -29th, 2012. The theme of the conference was Quality of Life through Quality of Information.

Marcello Melgara, Leader of  WP3.B Implementation, participated with a presentation about "epSOS: the large scale pilot to provide eHealth cross-border services to European citizens" and also operated a booth.

18th June: PGEU Annual Symposium 2012

The 2012 PGEU Symposium took place in Paris, France on the 18th of June 2012. epSOS Project Coordinator, Fredrik Lindén,  held a presentation on 'How Access to Patient Summaries can reduce risk in the Cross Border Context '.

4th June - 6th June 2012: Major Cities Europe 2012

Large, medium and small cities – all face the same challenges: Budgets are tight, citizens want to participate in decision-making processes, they demand better services and new jobs. Local businesses have been hit by the economic crisis and identify growth potential in the public sector. How can cities respond to these challenges with the support of their IT departments? The 2012 MCE Conference took place from June 4 - June 6 in Vienna (Austria) and focused on this question. As epSOS national authority beneficiary the Austrian Ministry of Health, among the other LSPs,  participated in a dedicated workshop and in the exhibition. For more information visit:

30th May 2012: PublicPolicyExchange Cross-border Healthcare in Europe Event

One year on from the adoption of the EU Directive, the high level Symposium in its second year tackled challenges to the implementation of cross-border healthcare and the effect on patient’s safety and quality, health professionals’ mobility and European standards for healthcare services.

29th May - 30th May 2012: PEPPOL conference

The 7th PEPPOL conference took place in Rome (Roma Eventi Conference Centre 'Fontana di Trevi') from the 29th to 30th May, 2012. The event provided insight into the results and the future follow-up of the LSP project. Interested parties were provided with examples of pilot achievements and other first-hand information about PEPPOL. The aim was to show decision makers of the European Commission, Member States, public sector entities, suppliers and service providers the long term sustainability of PEPPOL through specific initiatives.

13th May - 18th May 2012: HL7 Working Group meeting

HL7 working group meetings (WGM) are held three times per year at varying locations. These working group meetings serve two important purposes: 1) They give the HL7 work groups a chance to meet face-to-face to work on the standards; 2) They provide an educational resource for the healthcare IT community. From 13th until 18th of May, 2012 another WGM took place in Vancouver (Canada).

Head of the Semantic Experts Group, Giorgio Cangioli, held a presentation about epSOS and its experience as Cross SDO project in the meeting on "HL7 Activities with Other SDOs" that took place during the event.

7th - 9th May: eHealth week in Copenhagen

The 10th edition of the ministerial eHealth conference took place 7-9 May in Copenhagen, Denmark within the eHealth week 2012 together with the World of Health IT conference and exhibition. epSOS was showcasing its demonstrator on the Patient Summary service at the booth of the European Commission. Additionally the Danish epSOS cross-border ePrescription service at a Danish pharmacy was demonstrated at the PatientVille.

Many people were interested in the project and the demonstrators. The epSOS representatives noticed that the knowledge of and about epSOS is increasing steadily. epSOS was mentioned in many workshops/speeches/meetings/discussions during the eHealth week. 

The general feedback was that people appreciate the work epSOS has done and that they are really impressed and amazed that this is not just a good idea anymore, but a real situation. Especially students and the industry were very keen to learn more about the project. Most people cannot wait to see it actively, some were already willing to participate.

6th - 10th March: CeBIT

From 6th to 10th of March the Large Scale Pilot (LSP) roadshow made a stop at the CeBIT 2012 to present all five of the LSP projects at the booth of the European Commission. CeBIT is the digital industry's biggest and most international event. Thanks to its unique combination of exhibition, conferences, keynotes, corporate events and lounges, CeBIT represents an unrivaled tool for doing business. 

The epSOS system was presented in its piloting environment to (e)health experts and laymen coming from different European and non-European countries. The interest of the audience was very high and the project team received a lot of positive feedback from the attendees. 

epSOS was part of the LSP joint booth, showcasing its services and offering insight to the broad public. Furthermore, Kathrin Morawetz (epSOS WPL of Dissemination) informed Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission, and Hans-Peter Friedrich, Federal Minister of the Interior in Germany, about the latest achievements within the project at the opening ceremony of the joint LSP booth.
