Authentication, in the context of eHealth information security, refers to the confirmation of the identity of a user demanding access to eHealth services. Its purpose is to verify whether or not the user really is who he/she claims to be. Authentication is not to be confused with Authorization, which deals with rights particular users or user groups may or may not have.

While Authentication deals with questions like: “Is this person really Dr. X?“, Authorization might ask “Does Dr. X have the right to access this specific kind of data?“.
