In order to achieve the overall goal of epSOS, which is to provide cross-border exchange of personal health data, the national entities within the project are cooperating to test eHealth services in pilot applications. For the first time ever, European patients will have the opportunity to use cross-border eHealth services when seeking healthcare in participating epSOS pilot countries, as tourists, business travellers, commuters or exchange students.

The technical, legal as well as organizational concepts developed in the project are subject to the extensive practical testing phase which will last for one year. Hence, epSOS will test eHealth services in the following areas:

• Patient Summary: Access to important medical data for the further treatment of patients
• Cross-border use of electronic prescription services ("ePrescription" or "eMedication")

In the extended project phase epSOS will further consolidate, scale up (participation of new nations) and operationalize the epSOS Services for ID management, security, semantics and standards. The following additional cross-border eHealth services are analyzed and will be tested in a second testing phase (if feasible):

• Integration of the 112 emergency services
• Integration of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
• Patient access to data
• Medication Related Overview (MRO)
• Healthcare Encounter Report (HCER)
